AMD and Seagate announced on Monday a demonstration of a new Serial ATA (SATA) interface called SATA3. The new interface offers speeds up to 6Gbps, or 600MBps.
Most personal computers use either the SATA or SATA2 interface with speeds limited to 1.5Gbps and 3Gbps, respectively. However there is a bottleneck because of software and hardware overhead that limit most SATA hard drives to 200MBps.
The new interface is backward compatible to existing SATA and SATA2 interfaces and share the same cables and connectors. SATA3 enhances power efficiency and improves native command queuing.
As of now, SATA3 is still in the final phase of development and there aren't any actual products yet.
