Firefox for Android reaches 'full' status

For Android devotees, Mozilla's issuance of Firefox for Android has been a long wait. Sure, the browser maker added it to the Android Market in beta form months ago and made the release candidate (RC) available last week.

However, today marks the first that the app is available in full, unfettered by qualifications that mark it a prerelease product prone to bugs and subjected to rigorous user testing.

Firefox 4 races out the gate, doubles share in 6 days

Computerworld - Mozilla's Firefox 4's browser usage share grew over two-and-a-half times in the six days since its March 22 launch, a Web analytics company said today.

According to California-based Net Applications, Firefox 4 accounted for 3.7% of all browsers used Sunday, up from last Tuesday's 1.4%.

Firefox 4's Sunday share was double that of Microsoft's newest browser, Internet Explorer 9 (IE9), which debuted March 14.

Mozilla has been touting Firefox 4's download count since the browser launched last week, when it recorded 7.1 million downloads in the first 24 hours, and an unofficial record of 8.75 million the second day.

Firefox 4 Beta 12 is available now! The new Beta has over 650 bug fixes including a fix for a memory leak that kept Firefox consuming RAM without opening tabs. Also when you hover over a link, the URL is displayed in the status bar instead of the location bar.

Google ups speed of Chrome 10

Computerworld - Google yesterday released the first beta of Chrome 10, touting the new version's faster JavaScript engine.

According to tests run by Computerworld, Chrome 10 is 64% faster than its predecessor on Google's own V8 JavaScript benchmarks. Google shipped the stable version of Chrome 9 earlier this month.
Google maintains three separate "channels" of Chrome -- stable, beta and dev -- that denote increasingly rougher-edged editions.
But in another JavaScript benchmark -- WebKit's widely-cited SunSpider -- Chrome 10 beta was no faster than Chrome 9. WebKit is the open-source project that develops the browser engine by the same name; both Chrome and Apple's Safari rely on the WebKit engine.
