Well, Steve Jobs Is Dead at Age 56

Jobs had been suffering from various health issues following the seven-year anniversary of his surgery for a rare form of pancreatic cancer in August 2004. Apple announced in January that he would be taking an indeterminate medical leave of absence. Jobs then stepped down as chief executive in late August, citing his inability to "meet my duties and expectations" stemming from his illness.

In a statement, Apple said paid tribute to its one-time leader as " a visionary and creative genius" adding that the world had "lost an amazing human being."

Just Bought An iPad? HAHA! Wanting to buy an iPad? Wait!

You're watching multisource tech news analysis from Newsy.

All of your techie dreams are about to come true. The Wall Street Journal is reporting the iPad 2 is in production. The new highly rumored version of Apple's $5 million product will have a few improvements.

"The new iPad will be thinner and lighter than the first model ... have at least one camera on the front of the device for features like video conferencing, but the resolution of the display will be similar to the first iPad..."

Characteristically, Apple is keeping its mouth shut. The Wall Street Journal named its sources for the story as "people familiar with the matter." However, the tech world still takes the report seriously. The Telegraph says the Journal has street cred.

"The Wall Street Journal ... has a history of [being] well informed where Apple's products are concerned ..."

So if it's being made, when can you get your hands on one? Well, Apple hasn't said. But, as CNN reports, history suggests fairly soon.

"A quick glance at the history of the iPhone, which launches a new model every year, suggests that we should expect to see the iPad 2 right around the first anniversary of its predecessor's launch: April 3, 2011."

This news comes at a convenient time for Apple.

Motorola began its push for the Xoom tablet, taking on Apple with an unusual Super Bowl commercial. ZDNet thinks the production news couldn't have come at a better time.

"Add it up and the Apple iPad production news is perfectly timed. Just as you're about to ponder a rival tablet, there's a reason to hold out a few weeks-- the iPad 2."

Speaking of rivals - Apple is feeling the pressure.

MSNBC: "The iPad is 17% of Apple's revenues. The iPad really, really matters for Apple."

HLN: "But also because there is competition coming from the likes of Motorola, Dell, Samsung."

KPIX: "HP is also looking at coming out with its own tablet device. Probably based on Palm's web operating system after HP bought palm last year."

So when will Apple spill the juicy secrets about the iPad 2?

Verizon to Start Selling iPhone

The US's biggest mobile network, Verizon, is expected to announce next week that it will begin selling Apple's iPhone.
The move, which requires different chips in the phone from those used in the version already sold through AT&T, America's second-biggest network, could potentially double iPhone sales in the US.
Leaked figures last month suggested that while Verizon grew its smartphone sales from 2.7m to 3.3m in the third quarter of 2010, AT&T's iPhone sales alone grew from 2.7m to 5.7m following the introduction of the iPhone 4 in the summer. That means that both Verizon and Apple stand to benefit handsomely from the move, which would end the exclusive agreement that AT&T has had since the iPhone's introduction in 2007.

Non-Browning Canadian Apples to Be Vetted By USDA

According to HuffPo, a Canadian biotech firm has applied to the US Department of Agriculture to be allowed to grow and sell genetically modified apples that resist browning when cut.

The so-called "Arctic" apples have the gene that causes oxidation suppressed, using technology from an Australian firm who developed it for potatoes.
